Alex Barthel wrote an article in the Higher Education section of The Austrlian in Oct 2007, in response to the finding in a report published by Bob Birrell from the Centre of Population and Urban Research. In the report, it was claimed that "one-third of international students who receive permanent residency here after graduating from an Australian university do not have the required language competence in English to be awarded a place in an Australian university, let alone manage a professional job here".
