The ELSSA Centre City Campus offers a range of drop-in workshops during semester. It also offers intensive academic English workshops in the July semester break.

SEMESTER CLASSES: NON-CREDIT SUBJECTS

Academic English drop-in workshops

  • available to all UTS students (completing a degree in English)
  • drop-in workshops (no enrolment necessary)
  • two hours a week over 4 weeks
  • free of tuition fees

The ELSSA Centre runs weekly workshops in conjunction with faculties. These workshops cover a range of topics, for example:

  • how to prepare and write assignments specific to your faculty
  • how to reference your work
  • how to present seminars
  • how to study for exams

To attend: consult the timetable on the ELSSA Centre website or at the Centre, then go to the classroom on the appropriate day and sign the attendance roll.

 
   
 
 

Student-initiated workshops

If students form a group of 12 or more from the same program or faculty, an ELSSA Centre lecturer will run specialised workshops. These workshops may be related to specific assignment tasks, required reading, or particular language skills. Please go to the ELSSA Centre for further information.

Academic caution compulsory workshops

Some students placed on Academic Caution may need to improve their academic English. Special workshops can be organised for these students. A minimum of 80% attendance is required to complete the workshops.

If your faculty has instructed you to complete a compulsory academic English workshop at the ELSSA Centre, please go to the ELSSA Centre, level 18, Tower Building, to enrol in one of the classes. You need to show evidence that your faculty has told you to complete an academic English workshop.

 
   
 
   
   
   

INTENSIVE ACADEMIC ENGLISH WORKSHOPS: NON-CREDIT SUBJECTS

The ELSSA Centre runs non-credit intensive academic English workshops at its City Campus in July. The workshops will commence on 5 July 2008. Registrations open in May 2008.

  • morning, afternoon, evening and Saturday classes
  • available to all enrolled students who have completed at least one semester of study (in English)
  • $20 administrative fee

We offer THREE workshops:

 
   
 
   

Academic writing & grammar

Classes focus on academic writing and grammar in context. Where possible, classes will be formed of students who are studying in the same faculty. Students in each class:

  • analyse academic English
  • produce written work
  • receive individual feedback.

The main focus of the classes is written English, but students' listening and speaking skills are also developed through tasks and activities.

There are three options. Please select one that best suits your schedule.

  1. Two weeks: 7 – 18 July 2008
    Morning: 10am – 1pm, Monday to Friday OR
    Evening: 6pm – 9pm, Monday, Wednesday & Friday

  2. One-week option: 14 – 18 July 2008
    9.30am – 3.30pm, Monday to Friday

  3. 3-Saturday option: 5, 12 & 19 July 2008
    9.30am – 3.30pm, 3 Saturdays
 
   
 
   

Pronunciation

Classes focus on the development of speaking skills through attention to word stress, rhythm and intonation.

  • Two weeks: 7 – 18 July 2008
    Afternoon: 2.30pm – 4.30pm, Monday to Friday
 
   
 
   

Seminar presentation

Classes focus on developing speaking skills for seminar presentation. The language and structure of a presentation and techniques for voice production are discussed. The workshop includes short practice sessions using video feedback.

  • One week: 7 – 11 July 2008
    Afternoon: 2.30pm – 4.30pm, Monday to Friday OR
    Evening: 6pm – 8pm, Monday to Friday
 
   
 
   

Registrations for these workshops open in May 2008. To apply, visit the ELSSA Centre on Level 18 of the Tower Building to complete an application form, or print out and complete the attached application form (click here to download) and submit it to the ELSSA Centre.

To enrol, you must attend a COMPULSORY enrolment session at the ELSSA Centre (City campus) between 10:00 am and 5:00 pm on 23 or 24 June 2008.

The compulsory enrolment session includes a short writing task and needs analysis. You should allow an hour for this process.

Please note: if you do not attend this enrolment, we cannot keep a place in the class for you.
