What is a one-to-one appointment?

A one-to-one appointment is a 40-minute face-to-face meeting with an ELSSA Centre lecturer to discuss your assigned work.

How can the one-to-one appointment help me?

At the appointment we can help you to:

  • understand your assignment question
  • develop and structure your ideas
  • use evidence effectively
  • improve your grammar, editing and proofreading skills
  • practise your presentation skills
  • develop your learning strategies.

We can’t:

  • help you with the content of your assignments
  • correct or ‘check’ grammar and spelling for you
  • proofread or edit your work.

Click here for more information on what we can and cannot do at the ELSSA Centre, and why.

How many appointments can I make per semester?

From Spring semester 2007, you can make up to TWO appointments a semester.

Who can make a one-to-one appointment?

Any student enrolled in any faculty completing a degree in English, and UTS staff.

How can I make an appointment?

  1. Logon with your Student Number and UTS password.
  2. For a first-timer, you will have to register by filling in the Profile page. Questions marked with an asterisk (*) are compulsory. Then click on “Register”.
  3. You can always go back to edit or update your details on the Profile page by clicking on “Profile” (at the top of every page).
  4. Click on “Session” (at the top of the page, next to “Profile”) to see what’s available.
  5. To scroll through the months, click on the left or right arrow on the calendar (at the top of the page).
  6. By default, you will see the monthly view.
  7. To view by the week, click on the calendar icon next to each week.
  8. To view by the day, click on the date.
  9. For appointments at the City campus, look for “CB” under “Campus”; for appointments at the Kuring-gai campus, look for “KG”.
  10. If it says “Book this session” under “Booked by”, it means the appointment is available for booking. Click on it, and that will take you to the booking details page where you will be asked what assistance you need in relation to the assignment. Then click on “Book”.
  11. If you go back to the appointment page, you will see “Booked” under “Booked by”. This means that you are successfully booked in for that appointment. A confirmation email will be sent to you once you are successfully booked in.
  12. Next to “Booked” is “Edit”. Click on “Edit” if you wish to update or cancel your booking.
  13. If it says “Not available” under “Booked by”, it means the appointment has been booked. You may choose to go on the waiting list by clicking on “Add” under “Waiting”. You will be notified by email if the appointment is cancelled and you are the next in line to take over.
  14. You can make up to two appointments a semester.
  15. If you wish to cancel your booking, you must do so at least 24 hours before the appointment through the online booking system.
  16. You are required to email the draft of your assignment, assignment question, and assessment criteria to the lecturer at least 24 hours before the appointment. If you don’t do this we may cancel your appointment. You can find the lecturer’s details in the confirmation email.
Please do not email multiple versions of the same assignment to the lecturer, and ensure that you have your name and page number on the pages of the draft in the header/footer.
  17. To logout, click on “Exit”.

If you do not show up for your appointments twice (without valid reasons), you may not be able to make any more appointments.

As this service is very popular, make your appointment at least 2 to 3 weeks before your assignment is due.

Can I seek help with a group project?

When it comes to a group project, you may either see the lecturer on your own, or as a group.

If you choose to see the lecturer on your own, you can only discuss your share of contribution in the group project.

If you choose to see the lecturer as a group, please make sure that you have notified the lecturer in advance (either when you make the booking, or via email) so that s/he is prepared for it. You may need to book more than one appointment for assistance with the project, depending on what your needs are.

When should I submit my work?

24 hours before your appointment time.

You need to email to the lecturer:

  • a draft of your assignment (one version only, with your name and page number on the pages in the header/footer)
  • the assignment question
  • the assessment criteria.

If you want to talk to the lecturer about planning your assignment, please fill in the details when you book the appointment.

If you want help with notetaking or reading, please bring examples of your notes and course reading materials.

Please note:

  • If you do not confirm your appointment at least 24 hours in advance, or if we do not receive your work before the appointment, we may cancel the appointment.
  • If you are unable to come to the appointment, please cancel it through the online booking system so that another student can take your place.
