GUIDELINES FOR FACULTY LECTURERS

Guidelines for faculty lecturers show how ELSSA Centre lecturers can work with faculty lecturers on specific subjects or assessment tasks in order to develop students’ academic language and literacy.

Rationale:   Academic Literacy Integration Project
Procedure: Steps 1–3 below

Step 1 – prior to meeting with an ELSSA Centre lecturer

  • consult ELSSA Centre Faculty Liaison 2007 to identify your ELSSA Centre contact
  • check with your faculty’s A/Dean T & L to find out which other subjects ELSSA may already be supporting
  • identify students’ language and literacy needs, such as:
    • Written language: vocabulary, grammar, cohesion, style, genre, writing critically, summarising, avoiding plagiarism, understanding a subject’s set readings
    • Spoken language: participation in tutorials, pronunciation, presentation skill
  • send the ELSSA lecturer:
    • a subject outline
    • a booklet of subject readings and/or a copy of the set text
samples of students’ writing, preferably with lecturer feedback.

Step 2 meeting with an ELSSA Centre lecturer

  • prioritise areas of need/concern
  • consider whether student needs should be assessed further, e.g. through a short written task
  • discuss Options for ELSSA Centre support and decide on a schedule
  • plan for the ELSSA Centre lecturer to attend some lectures in this subject.
Step 3 – post-meeting
  • enrol the ELSSA Centre lecturer in UTS Online
  • confirm room bookings
  • publicise workshops to students
  • advise local HECS students to complete a CAF prior to attending workshops
